What is 'Awa?

'Awa is a drink made from the roots and stump of a plant called Piper Methysticum, a relative to black pepper. It has been consumed throughout the South Pacific for over 3,000 years because it is known to promote feelings of calm, well-being, and sociability. It tastes earthy and numbs the tongue slightly. Fresh Hawaiian 'Awa and Dry Kava

What's the difference? Fresh is from the Big Island and has never been dried, it has a milder taste! Dry comes from all over the South Pacific and has been dried for shelf stability - this means we can get a stronger mix!

💡Awa Pedagogies: Reflections on the Classroom and/as the Kānoa

🧠 In this interactive event, Kumu Kāwika Tengan will lead a talk story on the role of ‘awa in the transmission of knowledge both inside and outside the walls of the university. In so doing, he invites a collective reimagining of what a true Hawaiian place of learning might taste like.

📝Ty P. Kāwika Tengan is professor of ethnic studies and anthropology at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and a member of the Hale Mua o Kūali‘i. He enjoys teaching students and shaping ‘apu, occasionally at the same time.
